Book Review: The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Anyone can betray anyone. . .

That absolutely stunning cover and this quote alone is what got me reading The Red Queen. Well, those and the fact that work was really, really slow.

What can I say about this book that hasn’t been said a hundred times before in a hundred different reviews?

The Red Queen is so over-hyped”

The Red Queen was the best book I’ve ever read!”

With a wide range of reviews, it’s hard to gauge this books actual likability!

Sure, this book has been overly-hyped, and of course that can put a damper on it meeting your standards but that doesn’t discount how great of a read it is!

What I admire most about this book is Aveyard’s ability to combine all these various elements into a single book. The politics of betrayal that is found in A Game of Thrones, the abilities that, as some say, can be found in X-Men and countless other stories. It’s not about the ideas being unoriginal (which truly original ideas are few and far between these days. . . Just look at all the remakes, sequels, and book adaptations being pumped out in Hollywood.) It’s about how well these concepts are brought together to create a world that you can get lost in.

The plot was quick paced and didn’t leave the characters mulling around for long. There was constantly something happening and it’s up to the reader to decide who to trust.

One qualm that I do have about this book is that the character development had a few holes. In order for betrayals to truly make an impact, we as readers need to be connected and/or devoted to the characters and I just didn’t have that full connection that I’ve had with other characters from other books. ~Cal seemed unrealistically attached to Mare, Mare seemed too attached to Maven.~

I’ve been in and out of reading for the past while as I really haven’t had time but The Red Queen was a great, light read that had twists and turns I, even with my 6th sense for calling plots, did not see coming until it happened.

I hope this review helps in some way, shape, or form in deciding to read this book (just read it, it’s really quite beautiful!)

Thanks for reading!

~Book Haul!~*yay*

Hello people of the internet and bloggers alike!

I’m going to change up my usual schedule a bit because, well, I got bored of the old one. Too procedural.

So instead of my usual ♫~Stuck on Repeat~♫ post that I do on Mondays, I’ll be sharing with you my new haul of books! Though I may throw in a song, just for you :)

So yesterday I received, on my front porch, a beautiful Amazon box! And boy did I squeal like a little girl when I saw it. I jumped up and down, grabbed the beautiful contraption that carried hours and hours of entertainment, and then tore through said contraption like a lion taking down a gazelle. Like a child devouring the candy they collected after Halloween. Like . . . like . . .ah shoot, I’m all out of analogies…

Anyway! Here are the fabulous books I received in this book haul :)

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Besides the beautiful cover, this book sounds fantastic. It involves dimensional and time travel and sounds just totally kickass.

Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their radical scientific achievements. Their most astonishing invention: the Firebird, which allows users to jump into parallel universes, some vastly altered from our own. But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer—her parent’s handsome and enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.

The Raven Boys Trilogy. Having already read the first book, I am extremely excited for the next two. The author (who has an extremely unpronounceable name) has this writing style that is very quirky and abundant in beautiful sarcasm :)

The Raven Boys (The Raven Boys #1)

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

The Dream Thieves (The Raven boys #2)

Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Boys #3)

The Darkest Minds. Okay, this series is so far one of the best book series I’ve ever read. The first two were amazing and I cannot wait to read the third.

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1)

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Never Fade (The Darkest Minds #2)

In the Afterlight (The Darkest Minds #3)

The Fifth Wave. This first book was/is so brilliant. I had a massive book hangover after I read it! I couldn’t even look at another book for at least a month!

The Fifth Wave

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

The Infinite Sea

Wellp. That’s all I’ve got for this book haul! I hope you check out these books because they’re tremendous!

Anyway, here’s that song I promised you :)

Don’t Let it Get You Down by Johnnyswim

I just found this song this past week and I seriously have not been able to keep it out of my head. I hope you enjoy!

Have a super-tastic day!

~Movie Tuesday~

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Today I shall share with you a movie a watched a few months ago that I absolutely loved.

The Way, Way Back.

I went into this movie with almost zero expectations which made it all the better. This movie had me laughing so hard my abs hurt in one second and tearing up the next. Not to mention the extreme sympathetic embarrassment I felt for the main character when he took the word AWKWARD to a whole new level.

Seriously, if you haven’t seen this film I definitely think you should check it out.

Hope your day has been full of wonders!

♫~Stuck on Repeat~♫

Hello again beautiful people that I can’t actually see!

Guess what!

I was seriously worried that Imagine Dragons would turn out like Maroon 5 where they make only mainstream pop garbage. Don’t get me wrong, Maroon 5 started out great and I still listen to them on a regular basis. They consistently created great music up until about 2 albums ago. TOO MUCH POP! DON’T CONFORM!

Anyway, Imagine Dragons did not disappoint. Though their sound may have changed a bit (maybe a tad more folky/alternative) it still has a strong beat and I love it :)

Without further ado (or any more fangirling) I bring you

I Bet My Life by Imagine Dragons!

~1 Week in 1 Post~

GEEZ Sheradyn! Is it really that hard to keep to a simple schedule?! You haven’t posted in over a week!

Well alternate Sheradyn who is pretending to be her own readers, as you may know I’ve been sick this past week. Quite disastrously so. Seriously I couldn’t possibly count how many pieces of tissue I used in this past hellish week.

On the plus side I was able to lounge on the couch and binge watch lots of shows on Netflix!

So to make it up to you my oh so loyal readers I shall write each post I missed starting with last Monday!

MONDAY ♫~Stuck on Repeat~♫

Do I Wanna Know by the Arctic Monkeys (GREAT BAND!)

TUESDAY ~Movie Tuesday~

After my extensive relationship with the couch and Netflix this week I have new arsenal of mediocre movies but one film I watch was absolutely tremendous!

A Long Way Down.

This movie takes you on a journey of depression and suicide without making you feel depressed. It has the perfect blend of quirky, feel-good, sad, and heart-warming. I definitely recommend this movie! It’s on instant streaming on Netflix!

WEDNESDAY ~Hey Sheradyn, How’s Life?~

I was sick.

nuff said.

THURSDAY~Currently Reading~

I am/was currently reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

A little late on the bandwagon, eh?

Actually, it’s not really my choice to read it since it’s required reading for my English class (It never really interested me).

FRIDAY~Miscellaneous Friday~

Well, I enjoyed this quote quite thoroughly.

I’m gonna do my movie review in a separate post. Easier for me to organize. As it is, I have no clue how sort this post…

I hope this makes up for my lack of posting the past week. :)

Have a marvelous day!

~Hey Sheradyn, How’s Life?!~ I Danced With a Stranger!~

Life is great, so sweet of you for asking!

I’ve actually had a pretty awesome week!

I’m notoriously known for being an incredibly peppy morning person, especially on Mondays. This last Monday morning I was much more peppy for reasons I’m actually not quite sure of.
So I woke up, did my normal routine, went to classes, studied like crazy during lunch for a midterm, and as it turns out, the class I was supposed to be having a midterm in got canceled! SCORE!

So then I’m making my way home and decide to take the longer route through Historic Folsom. So I’m sitting at a stoplight in the middle of Old Folsom listening to some tunes when all of a sudden the guy who was in the car behind me starts dancing by my passenger door! My windows are already down and I hear him, as he is still dancing, say, “hey, how are ya?!”
Naturally I start dancing with him and respond, “hey! Yeah, I’m fantastic!”
And then he ran and jumped back in his car.

This event seriously made my entire week.

Random stranger dude who danced next to my car, if you’re reading this, I love you and your crazy dance moves. :)

Anyway, I hope your week has been as great as mine!

~Movie Tuesday~

What do you get when Brad Pitt, Shia labeouf, and Logan Lerman make a move?

Well, at least I’m hoping its a whole lotta awesome considering it isn’t even out yet…But that’s besides the point.

These three beauties are in a movie together and we will be able to admire their faces on the big screen!

I cannot wait to see this film!

Hope your day is fantastic!
